CRANBERRY RELISH
A Myrrl Kellogg Heady Recipe
(born August 26, 1885 in Nebraska - passed away February 27, 1973 in Turlock, California)

The first time I met my Great Aunt Myrrl (Kellogg) Heady, I was a child of 6 or 7 years of age.  I remember making the trip to Turlock, California wearing a little burnt orange suit my mother had made for me.  I had been named after this aunt, who was married to my favorite great uncle Michael "John" Heady.  They had become displaced from their farm home in Erie, Kansas, when my Aunt Myrrl's mother had a heart attack.  "Come to California and take care of your mother," the medical professionals had said.  "She won't last long, and is currently bedridden."  Part of their statement was true.  My great aunt's mother was definitely bedridden, but she lived to be over 100 years of age.  My great aunt and great uncle never returned to their farm in Kansas, and I spent many holidays in their new found Turlock home.  I have fond memories of her being a "legendary" cook of warm and wonderful food that she created for us there.  Most precious of all were her homemade rolls, which I have found no one can surpass.  I spent many sessions standing side by side, in her kitchen as a teenager and young adult, trying to emulate what she created in breads.  I was never able to accomplish it. . . but this one delightful CRANBERRY RELISH recipe, still manages to remain true, even under my hands.

Aunt Myrrl (her first name was reported to be 'Plumma' (unsure of spelling), but she always went by 'Myrrl' (middle name).  She and my Uncle 'John' had been married in Erie, Kansas on November 18, 1906.  They were married over 50 years, until Uncle John passed away in Turlock on June 30 1959 (link Uncle John & Aunt Myrrl's 50th wedding anniversary picture).   Uncle John's brother (another of my Great Uncle's was also married that November day in 1906.  He and his wife also lived to celebrate 50 years of marriage.  Neither brother knew at the time of their marriages, that the other was getting married too.  Talk about a communication problem. . .
